This is the 1st episode involving a Chinese vessel since 2022; case comes at a time of deterioration in political dialogue between Tokyo and Beijing
Japanese authorities seized a Chinese fishing boat and arrested the vessel’s captain on suspicion of disobeying an inspection order in Japan’s exclusive economic zone. The case was registered on Thursday (12.Feb.2026) in waters close to the province of Nagasakiin the southwest of the country.
According to the Japanese fisheries agency, the commander –47 year old Chinese citizen– would have ignored the order to stop navigation and allow the onboard inspection. Another 10 crew members were on the vessel at the time of the approach. Japanese authorities reported that the boat was seized and the captain was detained.
In an interview with journalists on Friday (13.Feb), the chief secretary of the cabinet, Minoru Kiharadeclared that the government will continue to adopt firm measures to curb fishing activities considered illegal by foreign vessels. China’s Foreign Ministry did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
Although Japan has already detained boats from South Korea and Taiwan in recent years, this is the first episode involving a Chinese vessel since 2022. The case comes at a time of deterioration in political dialogue between Tokyo and Beijing.
Diplomatic wear and tear between Japan and China
In recent months, statements by the Japanese Prime Minister, , have contributed to diplomatic wear and tear. Last year, she said Japan could even react with military means if China used force to incorporate Taiwan, an autonomously governed territory claimed by Beijing. The signaling provoked and intensified exchanges of criticism between the 2 countries.
Japan and China maintain strong commercial interdependence, but face recurring strategic and territorial disputes. One of the permanent sources of friction involves the islands Senkaku Islands —called Diaoyu by China— in the East China Sea. The area is a frequent target of incursions by vessels and aircraft, with mutual declarations of violation of sovereignty.
