Shooting attack leaves two dead and one injured at US university

At least two people were killed and one was injured in a Thursday night shooting at a dormitory at South Carolina State University, a historically black institution, which led to a campus lockdown, authorities said in a statement.

The attack was reported around 9:15 p.m. local time in an apartment in the Hugine Suites student housing complex, according to the statement, posted on the university’s Facebook page.

Few additional official details were available, including whether any of the perpetrators were still at large.

“University authorities have not yet confirmed the identity of the victims or the condition of the injured person,” the statement read.

South Carolina State University, with an enrollment of more than 3,000 students, is one of two historically black universities in Orangeburg, South Carolina, a riverfront college town about 40 miles southeast of the state capital, Columbia. The other is Claflin University.

A person who answered the phone line at the university’s public safety office Thursday night said they were not authorized to provide any information about the case.

The university said it asked the State Law Enforcement Division to investigate the attack and that classes for Friday (13) were canceled.
