US enters partial shutdown of Department of Homeland Security

The United States Department of Homeland Security enters a partial shutdown starting in the early hours of this Saturday (14).

The event takes place after the sector’s annual funding has expired. — 2 am on Saturday Brasília time.

The situation is the result of the impasse between Republicans and Democrats, who have not reached a consensus on reforms in the application of immigration laws.

Democratic senators voted to block a funding bill for the DHS, in advance of the deadline, which had already increased the chances of a shutdown of the agency that manages, among other areas, FEMA, the TSA, the Coast Guard and ICE.

The Department of Homeland Security, responsible for ICE, is the last federal agency without funding for the remainder of fiscal year 2026, which ends September 30. Even during the shutdown, however, ICE would continue to perform its core functions, according to several congressional aides.
