The suspect allegedly produced explosives, attempted to purchase weapons illegally and shared terrorist propaganda material. Authorities canceled three of the singer’s concerts after receiving information from the United States about the threat.
In a statement, the Vienna Public Prosecutor’s Office stated that the accused, whose name was not disclosed, declared loyalty to the Islamic State when sharing advertising material and videos through various messaging applications.
The Prosecutor’s Office also accuses the defendant of having “obtained instructions on the internet for the construction of a shrapnel bomb based on the explosive triacetone triperoxide”, normally used by Islamic Stateand having produced a small quantity of the explosive.
The Prosecutor’s Office also states that the accused made “several attempts” to purchase weapons illegally outside the country and bring them to Austria.
The Vienna Public Prosecutor’s Office spokesman confirmed to the Associated Press that the accused is in custody.
Austrian media outlets identified the suspect as Beran A. and reported that he was detained in August 2024.
Austrian authorities have canceled three Taylor Swift concerts scheduled for Vienna in August 2024, after they say they foiled an apparent plot to attack the performances.
The United States provided information that contributed to the decision to cancel the concerts.
