Brazilian carnival dominates social networks and becomes a global trend

Brazil is trending on social media and has become a global trend, especially during the Carnival period.

The phenomenon, discussed by Pedro Pacifico on the program Leitura do Fato da CNN Brazilreveals how the country has attracted international attention, not just for its beaches and parties, but for all its cultural diversity.

Numbers confirm this: 2023 registered a historic record of 9.3 million foreigners visiting Brazil, representing a growth of 37% compared to the previous year.

This significant increase is attributed to several factors, including the post-pandemic tourism resumption and currency devaluation, which makes the country more accessible to international visitors.

Brazilian culture on the international stage

An important aspect of this phenomenon is the change in the way . The country is no longer seen just as a sun and beach destination, but also for its cultural richness, natural diversity and artistic production.

Films, series and even Brazilian literature have gained prominence abroad — recently, an American content creator, Courtney Henning Novak, went viral on social media talking about Machado de Assis.

The presence of international celebrities such as Shawn Mendes and Sarah Jessica Parker in Brazil also contributes to this movement.

On digital platforms, it is possible to observe a large number of foreigners producing content about the country, which generates debates about authenticity and opportunism.

Some critics question whether these content creators are simply taking advantage of Brazilians’ natural engagement on social media to gain views and followers.

Brazilian and international recognition

Pedro Pacifico stated that there is a historical contrast in the relationship between Brazilians and international recognition. “We are very proud of our culture, of what we produce, but we feel that we are not so.”

This feeling would justify the enthusiasm when foreigners talk about Brazil, generating high levels of engagement.

Contemporary Brazilian cultural production has also contributed to this international projection. Brazilian cinema, series on streaming platforms and other artistic manifestations are reaching audiences beyond national borders.

Literary works such as “Coração Sem Medo” by Itamar Vieira Júnior, “A Vida Invisível de Eurídice Gusmão” by Martha Batalha and “O Voo da Guará Vermelha” by Maria Valéria Rezende were cited as examples of contemporary Brazilian literature that portray different aspects of the country’s reality.

Another important point highlighted is the change in the stereotypical perception that existed about Brazil and, mainly, about Brazilian women.

What was previously limited to images of “sun, beach and party” is now expanding to include biodiversity, cultural diversity and other destinations beyond Rio de Janeiro.

Social networks and organic content produced by tourists visiting the country have contributed to a more comprehensive and less stereotypical view of Brazil, presenting it as a tourist destination that can be enjoyed throughout the year and in different regions.
