The room is heated – and not just politically. The Jahnturnhalle in Ried im Innkreis is swarming with people, beer mugs are clinking, and it smells of fish spread. Dirndl, lederhosen, checked shirts – some of the guests came in traditional costume. Waiters fight their way between tightly packed tables with beer mugs. “Let’s get into the fray!” calls a waitress, shoulders her tablet and dives in. Herring and potato cheese, Liptauer, with rollmops and rolls – the “Ash Wednesday snack” is distributed piece by piece on paper plates. The band plays on the stage.
