The Tata Group announced on Thursday (19) a partnership with OpenAI to create the first data center AI-optimized large-scale technology in India, a significant step towards boosting the country’s AI infrastructure.
In a speech at AI Impact Summit On Thursday, Tata Group Chairman Natarajan Chandrasekaran said the installation would start with a capacity of 100 megawatts, expandable to one gigawatt.
The deal represents a major boost for Tata Group’s TCS (Tata Consultancy Services), which last year disclosed plans to invest up to $7 billion in a 1 gigawatt data center facility in India.

Chandrasekaran said on Thursday that Tata will also work with AMD to “create a high-density, sustainable AI capability in India that meets global standards.”
India has seen a significant increase in spending on high-cost AI infrastructure, with global companies like , , Meta Platforms and stepping up investments, along with domestic companies like Reliance and Adani Group.
The Tata Group also plans to roll out ChatGPT Enterprise across the company over the next few years, starting with hundreds of thousands of employees. OpenAI is the parent company of ChatGPT.
