The man identified as João Vitor, accused of running over the young indigenous woman Wendyla Puyanawa, aged 17, presented himself at the police station on Thursday, the 19th. The accident occurred in the early hours of Wednesday, the 18th, in the Guarani neighborhood. Accompanied by a lawyer, the driver was questioned by police chief José Albetânio and then released.
In his statement, João Vitor denied being under the influence of alcohol at the time of the collision. According to police records, the driver fled the scene shortly after the collision and subsequently fell the vehicle into a ditch. He abandoned the car and a passenger at the scene, fleeing again before the Military Police arrived.

The victim, Wendyla Puyanawa, was rescued and taken to Abel Pinheiro Hospital, but did not survive and died after a cardiac arrest shortly after arriving at the unit.
According to delegate José Obetanio, the investigation will continue with new hearings scheduled for this Friday. The driver of the motorcycle on which the young woman was riding, as well as witnesses to the incident, will be summoned. The Civil Police are also awaiting the results of the requested expertise to complete the investigation.
