Soraya Thronicke goes to PSB and should run for re-election to the Senate with Lula’s support

Senator Soraya Thronicke (Podemos-MS) confirmed this Friday (20) that she forwarded her membership to the PSB and intends to run for re-election to the Senate for Mato Grosso do Sul on a ticket with federal deputy Vander Loubet (PT).

The alliance, which will have the support of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT), was announced in an interview with TV 247.

According to Soraya, the decision was made after a meeting with Loubet, who also presides over the PT state directory, in which she was pressured to define whether or not she would participate in Lula’s re-election project.

The political issue involving the senator and her migration to the PSB had already been negotiated with the approval of the national president of the party and mayor of Recife, João Campos.

The move represents a turnaround in Soraya’s trajectory, who in 2018 supported then-president Jair Bolsonaro and projected herself nationally linked to Bolsonarism.

Having broken with the former president, she ran for Palácio do Planalto in 2022 as an alternative to the projects led by Lula and Bolsonaro.

In an interview with BBC Brazil Last year, the senator stated that the break with Bolsonaro began with his resistance to listening to other politicians, and was consolidated with the series of attacks on the Federal Supreme Court (STF) and the government’s conduct during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Previously a self-declared “Bolsonaro senator”, Soraya said she “let herself be fooled” by the former president and today defines herself as center-right.

Since the beginning of Lula’s third term, she has been part of the government’s support base in the Senate, in a gradual movement towards getting closer to the progressive camp.
