US President Donald Trump’s administration has condemned “terrorism” in France and warned of violence by “left-wing extremists” after a right-wing activist was murdered in the country. TASR writes about it according to an AFP report.

US Assistant Secretary of State for Public Diplomacy Sarah Rogers said the killing of Quentin Deranque demonstrates “why do we (US) take political violence – terrorism – so hard”.

“When you choose to kill people for their opinions instead of trying to convince them, you choose to withdraw from civilized society.” she wrote on the X platform. “We will continue to follow this case,” added. “Violent radical left-wing extremism is on the rise and its involvement in the death of Quentin Deranque demonstrates the threat it poses to public safety,” the US Department of State’s Counterterrorism Office said in a separate statement.

Twenty-three years old Quentin Deranque died after suffering a severe brain injury when he was attacked by ‘at least six’ on Thursday people during the extreme right-wing protest against a left-wing politician, who previously spoke at a local university, Lyon prosecutor Thierry Dran said at a press conference.

His killing has already sparked a diplomatic row between France and Italywhose right-wing Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has close ties to Trump. She described the murder of Deranque as “a blow to all of Europe”, for which she earned criticism from the French president Emmanuel Macron for commenting on French internal affairs.
