In a building, you can protect yourself from an earthquake by taking shelter near a retaining wall or under a door frame. On the contrary, standing by the window can be dangerous. If you are caught by an earthquake outside the building, you must stay outside. If a person is inside, they should not leave the building. This follows from the information published by the Ministry of the Interior (MOI) of the Slovak Republic in the manual What to do in the event of a crisis or armed conflict.
- The Slovak Ministry of the Interior has published recommendations for behavior during an earthquake.
- In the building, you must protect yourself against a retaining wall or under a door frame.
- In the event of an earthquake outside the building, it is best to stay outside.
- Stairs, elevators, windows and panic movements should be avoided.
- While driving, it is necessary to stop in an open space and not get out of the vehicle.
A table can also provide shelter in a building, and it can also be hidden under the nearest durable object. Stairs and elevators should also be avoided. MV points out that most injuries during earthquakes occur during panic movements.
„Stay outside as far as possible from power lines, trees, monuments, etc. “Do not stay in narrow streets, if necessary seek protection under the nearest gate,” advises the Ministry of the Interior in the manual.
When driving in a vehicle, stop in an open area, do not get out and wait for the shocks to pass. Handling an open fire can be dangerous during an earthquake. There is a risk of leakage and subsequent gas explosion and fire. “Make sure your loved ones and neighbors have all the information and get them the help they need, while keeping your own safety in mind,” added the ministry.
