Trump’s threat of new tariffs has angered the world. Lula calls for equality and warns of a new cold war

Brazilian President Lula called on Donald Trump to treat all countries equally after the US leader announced plans to raise global tariffs on US imports to 15 percent. He emphasized that Brazil wants normal relations and supports peace and development.

New Delhi, February 22 (TASR) – Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva said on Sunday that United States President Donald Trump should treat all countries equally. Lula made the comments after Trump announced on Saturday his plan to raise global tariffs on US imports to 15 percent. TASR informs about it according to the report of the AFP agency.

  • Lula called on Trump to treat all countries equally.
  • Trump plans to raise global tariffs on US imports.
  • The US Supreme Court rejected the sweeping tariffs imposed by Trump.
  • Lula hopes to improve relations between Brazil and the US.
  • A March meeting between Lula and Trump in Washington is expected.

“I want to tell US President Donald Trump that we don’t want a new cold war. We don’t want interference in any country, we want all countries to be treated equally,” the Brazilian president told reporters in New Delhi.

Since returning to the presidency, Trump has imposed tariffs on US trading partners. The U.S. Supreme Court on Friday rejected those sweeping tariffs under a national emergency law. According to the court, the law relied on by Trump “does not authorize the president to impose tariffs.”

In response to the court’s decision, the head of the White House announced the introduction of a global tariff of ten percent. On Saturday, he said he would increase these taxes to 15 percent.

Lula said he did not want to comment on a decision by another country’s Supreme Court, but expressed hope that Brazil’s relations with the US would “return to normal soon”.

The Brazilian president is expected to meet with Trump in Washington in March.

“I am convinced that Brazilian-American relations will return to normal after our conversation,” Lula said. According to him, Brazil wants to “live in peace, create jobs and improve the lives” of its people.

AFP notes that relations between Brazil and the United States appear to be improving after months of tension between the two countries. In November of last year, the Trump administration canceled its 40 percent tariffs on Brazilian food products that it had previously imposed on it.
