In the warmer months, exposure to the sun increases, whether on the beach, in the pool or even during everyday activities. At these times, the need for extra care for skin and hair also increases.
In addition to aesthetics, sun protection and hydration are public health issues, preventing everything from skin burns that can occur immediately after sun exposure to premature aging and skin cancer.
“In addition to using these products, I reinforce the importance of avoiding sun exposure between 9am and 3pm, wearing protective clothing, hats and sunglasses, and maintaining adequate hydration. Daily care is essential to preserve skin health throughout life”, says Elisabeth Lima, dermatologist.
To help you put together a functional and efficient toiletry bag for the season, dermatologists explain which products are essential and how to use each of them. Below, see seven products that cannot be missing from your wardrobe.
1. Sunscreen
Item number one on the list, sunscreen should be used daily, including on cloudy days. The ideal is to choose a product with SPF 30 or higher and that .
For the face, specific formulas help prevent excessive oiliness and the appearance of acne. “Choose products with an SPF above 30 and with a texture suitable for your skin type. Remember that sunscreen must be reapplied every 2 hours”, adds dermatologist Emanuela Biscarde.
2. Lip balm with SPF
Lips also suffer from solar radiation and are often forgotten in the care routine. Using lip balm with SPF helps prevent dryness, cracking and even pre-cancerous lesions. In this case, it is important to reapply every 1 hour.
3. Body moisturizer
After exposure to the sun, the skin tends to lose water, becoming drier and more sensitive. A good body moisturizer helps restore the skin barrier and maintain skin elasticity.
The recommendation is to opt for formulas with active ingredients such as aloe vera, panthenol, glycerin or hyaluronic acid, applying them right after showering, when the skin is still damp. “Prefer products with a light texture, which will gently hydrate your skin”, advises Biscarde.
4. After-sun or soothing
Although it does not replace moisturizer, the after-sun product is an important ally in cases of redness and burning sensations on the skin. It has calming and anti-inflammatory active ingredients that help alleviate discomfort caused by excessive exposure.
“Exposure to the sun dries out the skin and compromises its natural barrier. After-sun moisturizer helps restore hydration, relieve the burning sensation and keep the skin healthy”, explains Elisabeth Lima, dermatologist. “It can be used daily, even without visible burns”, he adds.
5. Thermal water or hydrating mist
Thermal water is another ally in skin recovery. It has minerals that soothe the dermis after sun exposure and help reduce facial temperature, combating redness. If you prefer, you can store the bottle in the refrigerator for an enhanced refreshing effect.
6. Thermal hair protector
Hair also suffers from exposure to the sun, sea salt and chlorine from the pool. The result can be dry, opaque and brittle hair. Thermal and sunscreen for hair creates a protective film that reduces this damage.
In addition to protecting against the heat of the dryer and straightener, many of these products contain UV filters and moisturizing agents. These products should be applied before going to the beach or pool and reapplied as per the manufacturer’s instructions.
7. Skin-friendly soap
In summer, increased sweating and the use of sunscreen require adequate hygiene, without damaging the skin. During this period, it is important to use a mild soap that does not dry out the skin and preferably choose one that is suitable for daily use after sun exposure.
“It is also important to avoid very abrasive products or excessive exfoliants”, adds Lima.
Pay attention to habits
In addition to products, dermatologists reinforce the importance of some such as avoiding sun exposure between 10am and 4pm, wearing hats, sunglasses and clothing with UV protection, in addition to maintaining good hydration by drinking water throughout the day.
