The Brazilian Navy set up a field hospital in La Guaira, the region most affected by what hit last Wednesday (24), with the capacity to carry out 150 treatments per day.
The Brazilian installation was the first of its kind in the region, according to the Navy — it has been operating since the 27th. The Indian Army set up a field hospital in Caracas, the capital of Venezuela, and an NGO (Non-Governmental Organization) from the United States also set up a unit in La Guaira.
The medical center is made up of the Advanced Trauma Unit (UAT) module, specialized in emergency surgeries and orthopedic procedures, with intensive care support and capacity for up to 30 beds.
“We have a surgeon, anesthesiologist, orthopedist, pediatrician, intensivist, clinicians and nursing staff. Some of our nursing staff are prepared for rescues in difficult to access areas, in case we need any type of support in relation to this too”, said the director of Umem (Navy Expeditionary Medical Unit), sea and war captain Marisa Martins, doctor responsible for the hospital, in a statement from the Navy.
In addition to health professionals, the Brazilian Navy also sent a special unit for rapid employment, the Immediate Response Force to Environmental Disasters (Frida), and marines to the region.
Medical care is one of the authorities’ areas of greatest attention after last week’s disaster. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the country’s hospital network after the earthquake.
