According to the NWS, snow could fall at a rate of between two and three inches per hour at the worst of the storm.
The city of New York ordered the closure of schools and recommended that drivers avoid the roads this Monday (23), in the face of the arrival of a violent snowstorm in the northeast of the United States. The National Weather Service (NWS) said blizzard conditions will “materialize quickly” from Maryland to southeastern New England, which will make travel “extremely dangerous.”
According to the NWS, snow could fall at a rate of between two and three inches per hour at the worst of the storm, with nearly 54 million people in its path. In the early hours of Monday, the storm had already begun to hit New York, reducing visibility to the point that it was difficult to see the skyscrapers of Wall Street from the neighboring neighborhood of Brooklyn.
Power outages are considered likely due to heavy snow and strong wind gusts, forecasters said. At 1:39 am local time (3:39 am Brasília time), almost 80,000 customers were without electricity in the state of New Jersey, according to the website poweroutage.us.
More than 5,000 flights were cancelled, tracking website FlightAware reported. In New York City, Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced that streets, highways and bridges would remain closed from 9 p.m. Sunday until noon Monday.
“New York City has not faced a storm of this magnitude in the last decade,” Mamdani warned at a press conference, urging residents to “avoid all non-essential travel.” The NWS warned that heavy snow, high winds and low visibility are expected to cause “dangerous or impossible travel conditions.” Tourists, however, were enchanted by the snow spectacle. Chilean Macarena González told AFP that it was a “great experience” as she walked through Times Square.
