On January 17th, the students of Tropea’s mathematics and science high school saw the body of a man lying on the beach from the windows of their classrooms and raised the alarm. Their school building, a converted 14th-century monastery, sits on the rocky outcrop that dominates the popular Calabrian seaside resort and offers breathtaking views of the Tyrrhenian Sea, the long, wide beach and the volcanic island of Stromboli. The dead man on the beach was a previously unidentified suspected migrant who paid with his life for his passage to Europe. Many children were disturbed by the sight, the director of the high school told the newspaper The Republic.
