The glass supermarket – how much government control can food prices tolerate?


How much transparency and control does the food market need? Austria is opening one barrel after another in the fight against inflation. From July onwards, VAT on selected foodstuffs will fall. From April, supermarkets should make shrinkflation visible. Both measures are met with resistance from trade and industry. But the real test of strength is yet to come: it’s about deep business internals – and thus the question of how far the state is allowed to intervene in market mechanisms.
