German coalition wants building modernization law with “biostairs”

Berlin – The black-red coalition in Germany is abolishing the controversial 65 percent target for new heating systems. The previous heating law will be deleted and replaced by a “building modernization law,” according to a key issues paper published by the government factions on Tuesday evening. This eliminates the blanket requirement that new heating systems must be powered by at least 65 percent renewable energy. Instead, according to the paper, the Union and the SPD are relying on openness to technology: the installation of natural gas and oil heating systems remains generally permitted, provided they are operated in a more climate-friendly manner in the future. “The new law will not contain any regulations that make it mandatory to expand or replace existing, functioning heating systems,” it said.
