The Prosecutor General of Venezuela has resigned: Maduro’s right-hand man is leaving the ship two months after the fall of the dictator!

Venezuelan Attorney General Tarek William Saab resigned from his post, the National Assembly announced on Wednesday. The AFP agency recalls that he submitted his resignation less than two months after the United States overthrew ex-president Nicolás Maduro, writes TASR.

“We have received a notice … signed first by citizen Tarek William Saab, (who) is resigning from his position as Attorney General of the Republic,” said the National Assembly during the session.

Saab has held the position of Prosecutor General since 2017. According to AFP, he was a key ally of ex-President Maduro and was often criticized by the opposition for he turned a blind eye to the alleged violation of human rights by the security forces.

He called Maduro’s detention during the operation of American troops on January 3 a violation of international law and called for the ex-president’s release. Reuters reported on Wednesday that the Venezuelan ombudsman, Alfredo Ruiz, had also submitted his resignation. According to the Speaker of the National Assembly, Jorge Rodríguez, deputies will choose temporary representatives for both positions until permanent replacements are elected.
