The Odeleite River Beach, in the municipality of Castro Marim, officially opens this Friday, June 26th, becoming the only inland bathing area in the Algarve with a Blue Flag in 2026. The opening had been expected for several years, but ended up being postponed due to the drought that affected the region.

According to , the rains recorded during the winter made it possible to restore the necessary conditions to move forward with the inauguration in time for the summer season. The new beach is located near the town of Odeleite, in the eastern Algarve, and should be open until September 30th, with support infrastructure and surveillance provided by lifeguards.

Expected opening in the interior of the Algarve

The inauguration of Praia Fluvial de Odeleite is seen with great expectation by the local population, mainly because it represents a new bathing option in the interior of the Algarve, far from the most popular coastal strip during the summer. The area is integrated into a landscape marked by the reservoir of the Odeleite Dam and the white houses of the village, which descend towards the river.

According to Expresso, the opening was only possible because the reservoir is now close to maximum capacity, after years in which water scarcity conditioned the project. With the rise in dam levels, the conditions were met to put the bathing area into operation, which will reach the Blue Flag seal in the summer of 2026.

The distinction is particularly relevant as it is the only river beach in the Algarve with this award. The Blue Flag is awarded to bathing areas that meet criteria related to water quality, safety, environmental information and space management.

Floating platform and two swimming pools

The new river beach includes a Non-Polluting Nautical Activities Center and was designed to offer a safe bathing area integrated into the landscape. One of the main elements of the space is a floating platform 20 meters long and 10 meters wide, which includes two swimming pools, one of which is intended for children.

Castro Marim City Hall explains that this solution allows the creation of a more comfortable bathing area, with easier access through two floating walkways and a bridge. The structure seeks to adapt to the characteristics of the reservoir, guaranteeing conditions for bathing use without distorting the natural surroundings. The solarium area is located above the bathing platform and develops into terraces, allowing visitors to enjoy the space on different levels. This area also contains the bar and changing rooms, essential equipment to support the new beach’s first summer season.

One more reason to visit Odeleite

In addition to the bathing area, the space has parking, which should facilitate access for visitors during the summer months. The presence of lifeguards reinforces the security of the area, in a model similar to what occurs on guarded sea beaches.

The Odeleite River Beach also aims to enhance the interior of the municipality of Castro Marim, offering a leisure alternative in a territory that has sought to assert itself beyond sun and sea tourism. The creation of this type of space can help to better distribute tourist flows and give greater visibility to the villages and landscapes of the Algarve interior. Odeleite is one of the best-known locations in the interior lee, marked by its relationship with the river and the surrounding landscape. The village maintains a traditional image, with white houses and streets that follow the terrain, in a different setting to that which many immediately associate with the Algarve.

The so-called “Blue Dragon River”

One of the curiosities associated with the area is the Odeleite stream, which feeds the dam’s reservoir. The watercourse became known as “Rio do Dragão Azul” after the release of an aerial photograph in which the water meandering through the Algarve mountains resembled the shape of a dragon. This image helped to make Odeleite better known outside the region and reinforce tourist interest in an area that combines nature, rural heritage and mountain landscape. The new river beach adds yet another reason to visit this area of the municipality of Castro Marim.

This Friday’s inauguration thus marks the official beginning of a space that brings together leisure, fresh water and internal landscape. After delays caused by the drought, Praia Fluvial de Odeleite finally reaches its first summer season with a Blue Flag and with the ambition of establishing itself as a new summer reference in the Algarve.
