Brazil responds to Italy on demands to try to facilitate the extradition of Carla Zambelli

This Thursday (25), Brazil filed a statement with the Supreme Court of Cassation of the Italian Republic regarding the extradition of former deputy Carla Zambelli. According to the note released by the Attorney General’s Office (AGU), the information provided by the Federal Supreme Court on the guarantees required by the Italian Court for extradition was sent, as well as on the validity of the conviction by the Brazilian supreme court.

“The manifestation was prepared in the context of the coordinated action of the Brazilian State in matters of international legal cooperation, with the institutional participation of the AGU, through the National Prosecutor’s Office of the Union of International Affairs (PNAI), in conjunction with the National Secretariat of Justice of the Ministry of Justice and Public Security, the Department of Asset Recovery and International Legal Cooperation (DRCI) and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.”, says the note.

Gilmar’s approval

On Tuesday (23), the minister Gilmar Mendesof the Federal Supreme Court (STF), it sent to the Attorney General’s Office (AGU) information required by Italy on guaranteed measures to the former federal deputy Carla Zambelli em possible extradition to Brazil. The information is from TV Globo and confirmed by Young Pan.

On July 1st, Zambelli will have hearing at the Court of Cassation in Rome about the second extradition request linked to sentenced to five years and three months in prison for illegal possession of a firearm and illegal restraint with the use of a firearm.

Extradition denied

A Court of Cassation of Italy denied on May 22nd the extradition request of the former deputy Carla Zambelli e ordered his release. Remember Zambelli’s convictions

In May 2025, the First Panel of the STF sentenced Carla Zambelli to 10 years in prison under a regime initially closed by . In the same month, the former federal deputy left Brazil. From Buenos Aires, Argentina, she traveled to Florida, in the United States. In June, she went to Italy, where she believed she was protected due to her Italian citizenship. However, on the same day of her arrival in the country, the former parliamentarian was included on the Interpol broadcast list.

In August, the STF sentenced Zambelli to five years and three months of arrest for illegal possession of a firearm and illegal restraint. The conviction was due to the episode in which the former federal deputy chased a man at gunpoint through the streets of São Paulo, on the eve of the 2022 elections.

Minister Alexandre de Moraes, from the STF, determined, in December, the revocation of the Chamber of Deputies’ decision to maintain Carla Zambelli’s mandate. Days later, the former federal deputy resigned from his position.
