The TCU Cultural Center, in Brasília, hosts, for the first time, the exhibition “Overflowing the world: the views of Tarsila do Amaral”which invites the public to revisit the trajectory of one of the main figures of Brazilian modernism. The exhibition remains open for free viewing until the day May 10.
With more than 60 original works, the exhibition features an immersive room with projections of the artist’s iconic paintings, such asAbaporu, Cuckoo e Anthropophagy. The space evokes the so-called “tarsilian gardens” — lush and imaginary landscapes that marked Tarsila do Amaral’s visual universe.
Curated byKarina SantiagoRachel Vallego and Renata Rocco, the exhibition presents Tarsila as a “body-in-work”, where artistic and intellectual production is built in permanent elaboration, crossing the main aesthetic, social and political concerns of the 20th century.
Inside the exhibition
Organized into four curatorial groups, the exhibition follows the shifts in Tarsila’s gaze throughout her career: from the first years of her production as a painter until she reached the social phase, marked by a more direct approach to the country’s inequalities and structural transformations.
Two other sections address thediscovery of the space around youreconciling the speed of metropolises with the extended time of life in the interior, and ofworld of imaginationwith fantastic colors and shapes.
Among the highlights is Workersone of the most emblematic works by the artist and in the history of Brazilian art, which summarizes Tarsila’s critical view of the industrialization process and the world of work. The public will also be able to check out works such asSão Paulo, Central Railway of Brazil, Self-portrait I, Palmeiras, Florestaand the portrait ofMario de Andradebetween others.
