The Government of the Slovak Republic has an eminent interest in the restoration of production at the Slovalco aluminum smelter in 2027. Prime Minister Robert Fico (Smer-SD) stated this at a press conference after signing a memorandum of understanding on measures to support the production of primary aluminum in Žiar nad Hronom.
According to the prime minister, the memorandum contains proposals for specific steps that should help the Žará aluminum plant to restart, this is, for example, a change in the compensation scheme for energy-intensive businesses or the long-term supply of electricity to the factory in Žiar nad Hronom at commercial prices.
