Trade unionists confirmed Samsung’s intention to reduce the number of businesses and jobs: A clear message to Slovaks!

  • The trade union KOVO wants to give employees above-standard conditions for termination of employment.
  • Trade unionists plan to work with the labor office to find new jobs.
  • Already in 2018, Samsung definitively closed its production plant in Voderady.

The trade union (OZ) KOVO regrets the situation at Samsung, which was reflected in the intention of the company’s management to reduce the number of production enterprises and jobs in them, including the TV production plant in Galanta. TASR stated this in her opinion, the chairperson of the Council of the OZ KOVO, Monika Benedeková. At the same time, she declared an effort to negotiate the best possible terms for the termination of their employment for the affected employees.

“We will try to agree the best possible conditions for the termination of their employment for the affected people, beyond the scope of the applicable legislation and the Labor Code,” she emphasized. At the same time, trade unionists want to be as cooperative as possible with the local labor office in finding new job opportunities for laid-off employees and provide them with targeted advisory assistance within their capabilities.

The Prime Minister of the Slovak Republic, Robert Fico (Smer-SD), spoke at the Friday morning press conference about the fact that Samsung is considering re-evaluating the production capacities in its factories. He pointed out that there are big considerations about what will happen to the production of televisions in the Central European area. According to the Prime Minister, approximately 750 employees work at the Samsung factory in Galanta.

Samsung Electronics Slovakia opened a production plant in Galanta in July 2003. Later, a logistics and distribution center was added in the village of Gáň. At the turn of 2007 and 2008, the South Korean company also opened a production plant in the Voderady industrial park. In 2018, it decided to close it.
