Trump believes Khamenei’s death could facilitate a diplomatic solution with Iran

The president of the United States, Donald Trump, assured this Saturday that he believes that the death of the supreme leader of Iran, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, after a joint operation with Israel, could pave the way towards a diplomatic solution with the Persian country.

“It’s much easier now than it was a day ago, obviously,” Trump said when asked in an interview with CBS for the prospects of a diplomatic solution to the crisis. The president has stated that the US and Israeli forces “are beating up” the Iranians and has celebrated this Saturday’s attacks as “a great day for this country and for the world.”

Trump has noted that “there are some good candidates” to succeed Khamenei as Iran’s leaders, but he did not want to give more details about it. On the other hand, the president has appeared calm with the military response given by Iran, which has announced the largest military operation in its history against Israel and American targets, after ensuring that so far it has been smaller than expected.

“We thought it would be double,” he said. “So far, it’s been less than we thought.” According to the US Central Command, no American fatalities or injuries have been recorded in the Persian country’s response to Operation ‘Epic Fury’. Trump has praised what he considers successful US attacks and has said he remains focused on eliminating threats against his country.

Days before the attack on Iran, representatives of both countries met in Geneva for a round of negotiations on the Iranian nuclear program in which, according to its Foreign Minister, Abbas Araqchí, “good progress” was achieved.
