At least six people have died after a floor collapsed at a construction site in the city of Johannesburg, South Africa (JAR). Two other people were trapped under the rubblei, said the rescue service. It was reported by the AP agency. The local emergency management office said three other people were missing; one person was saved writes TASR.
The floor on the upper floor of a building in a suburb of Johannesburg collapsed and fell on the people below. The rescue operation was complicated because some parts of the building were still unstable and “crashed”. The office responsible for public safety informed that part of the building where the accident occurredwas under construction. Shortly after the accident, it was not immediately clear whether all the victims were workers.
An investigation will now follow to find out who was in charge of the construction and whether all building plans have been properly reviewed and approved. Also in 2024, a building collapsed in the South African city of George, while 34 workers died and the rescue work lasted ten days. The investigation showed that behind the tragedy were several mistakes, including a violation of safety regulations.
