According to Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul, Germany will not take part in military actions against Iran. “The German government has no intention of participating in them,” he said in an interview with Deutschlandfunk radio station. TASR informs about it based on the report of the DPA agency.
- Germany will not participate in any military actions directed against Iran.
- Germany has no military bases of its own in the Middle East region.
- German soldiers will intervene only in the event of a direct attack on the Bundeswehr.
- Iran has significantly renewed its ballistic missile program capable of reaching Europe.
- The Iranian regime supports the war against Ukraine and poses a terrorist threat.
The minister pointed out that unlike the UK, which has allowed the US to use British military bases in the region to destroy Iranian missiles and launch sites, Germany has no such bases there.
In case of attack, soldiers of the German army (Bundeswehr) would defend themselves. “Other measures going beyond this framework will not follow from the German point of view,” specified the minister. German troops are currently deployed primarily in Jordan, Iraq, and Lebanon, DPA reported.
When asked whether the Israeli-US attack on Iran was against international law, Wadephul replied: “Naturally, there are doubts about that, that’s for sure. But we have to take into account the overall assessment of the political and security situation we face. It is our responsibility as the federal government to say what this means for us. Iran poses a significant danger, not only to Israel and the region there, but also to Germany and Europe.”
According to the German Minister of Foreign Affairs, this danger lies specifically in the fact that Iran ‘significantly renewed its ballistic missile program’. He added that these are “missiles that can threaten Europe as well.” According to Wadephul, the regime in Tehran “was always determined to act against Europe, against European interests, and here in Germany it also posed a terrorist threat.” At the same time, the minister declared that Iran also supports the war against Ukraine and “I cannot simply ignore that.”
“When this (Iranian) regime stops, so that it can at least no longer act against us as it did in the past, our security here in Germany will increase. And that is the decisive point for me.” stressed the head of German diplomacy in an interview with the Deutschlandfunk station.
