The Minister of Defense, Margarita Robles, has categorically denied this Monday that they provide assistance to them and has added that it can only be done when it operates within international legality.
“Absolutely notin the bases in Morón de la Frontera (Seville) and in Rota (Cádiz) no type of assistance has been given,” the minister summarized when asked by journalists during an event in Armilla (Granada).
He added that, although for the use of the Morón and Rota bases, this agreement allows operating within the framework of international legality, but not when an army acts unilaterally.
The minister has reiterated that Spain is “totally against violence” and has insisted that the bases are not going to provide support, unless it is necessary for them to do so. from a humanitarian point of view.
Regarding the departure of tanker aircraft from the Andalusian bases, Robles has assured that “they have not carried out nor will they carry out any maintenance or support actions.”
The minister has pointed out that the United States has been able to make the decision to go with these planes to other bases knowing that, from the Spanish ones, they will not operate.
Regarding the statements of the Minister of Transport, Óscar Puente, who has described the European Union’s response to this conflict as lukewarm, Robles has pointed out that, despite the fact that the Tehran regime is “terrible and dictatorial” and violates human rights, The response must be framed in the international legal system.
“Many people are dying, many innocent people and in that sense Spain’s position is the correct position,” explained the minister, who said that this position consists of rejecting dictators and condemning attacks that do not respect legality.
“We cannot under any circumstances support a regime like the one in Tehran. That said, we understand that the formula can never be the exercise of violence, regardless of who the person on whom violence is exercised is,” Robles summarized.
Albares: Spanish bases, out of operation
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, José Manuel Albares, stressed this Monday that “the Spanish bases are not going to be used for anything that is not within the agreement… The Government of Spain is not going to use the bases for what is happening these days in Iran.”
Albares has also stressed that Spain “has the final say on the use of these bases” and has described the ongoing offensive as “a unilateral action outside of any collective action.”
Direct contact with the military
Minister Robles explained that the Government is in permanent contact with the Spanish soldiers deployed on missions in Iraq, Lebanon, Türkiye and the Atalanta mission.
“All prevention and security measures are being taken. They are very aware that there is a risk situation and They are ensuring your integrity“, the minister detailed.
He added that the Lebanese contingent has been bunkered by the bombings last night and that those displaced to Iraq are “perfectly situated” to avoid any type of attack.
