Switzerland calls for an easing of tensions and a return to diplomacy after Iran’s retaliatory attacks

The President of Switzerland appeals for the protection of civilians and civil infrastructure. He is calling for an immediate de-escalation and a return to diplomacy after Iran’s retaliatory attacks in the Persian Gulf.

Switzerland on Sunday called for a return to diplomacy in response to Iran’s retaliatory attacks in the Persian Gulf. Talks between Tehran and Washington were held in Geneva on Thursday, TASR reports according to the AFP agency.

Swiss President Guy Parmelin said on Platform X on Sunday that “all parties must protect civilians and civilian infrastructure, immediately de-escalate tensions and return to diplomacy.”

Meetings with the leaders of the region

Parmelin confirmed that he spoke with UAE President Muhammad bin Zayed Al Nahyan and Kuwaiti Crown Prince Sheikh Sabah Khalid Hamad Sabah on Sunday about the need to “prevent further destabilization of the region”.

In Geneva, Switzerland, Iran and the US held indirect talks on Iran’s nuclear program, with Omani mediators reporting “significant progress”.

Law enforcement challenges

After the weekend strikes by the US and Israel and the subsequent Iranian response in the Persian Gulf, Switzerland called for full compliance with international law, including the UN Charter and international humanitarian law, added Parmelin.

Neutral Switzerland has played a key role in diplomatic relations between Iran and the United States for decades, allowing the two nations to maintain minimal diplomatic and consular relations.
