Lawyer Amid Hadad suggested during Monday’s hearing in a Jerusalem court that judges were treating Netanyahu similarly to a former Nazi official and one of the main organizers of the Holocaust. Eichmann was sentenced to death in Israel in 1962 and executed.
Comparison with Eichmann
Hadad reacted to the court’s decision, according to which the corruption trial with the prime minister is to be held five days a week from October. He claimed that such an intensive schedule is exceptional in Israeli judicial practice and recalled that only the Eichmann trial was conducted in this way in the past.
The defense attorney emphasized that, in his own words, under the given conditions, he has no real possibility of providing Netanyahu with a full-fledged defense. He pointed out that with a five-day court week, there is no room for vacation, family life or privacy of the prime minister and added that, in his opinion, it is not possible to properly conduct court proceedings under such circumstances.
Corruption cases of the prime minister
Netanyahu faces charges in two cases in which he allegedly negotiated favorable media coverage in Israeli media in exchange for political interventions or concessions. In the third case, the prosecution accuses him of accepting luxury gifts worth more than 260,000 dollars, while these gifts were supposed to be compensated for political services.
The fourth charge of corruption has since been dropped. Netanyahu is the first sitting Israeli prime minister to face a corruption trial, and he has long argued that the prosecution is politically motivated.
