She responded to the statements of the former president of , , about the possible disruption of trade, calling on Washington to respect the bilateral agreements with the European Union.
As Spanish government sources stated “our country has the necessary resources to mitigate the possible effects, support the sectors that may be affected and diversify the supply chains”.
According to El Pais, they also pointed out that Spain is a “core member of NATO” and an “exporting power of the EU”.
“Spain keeps its commitments […] and is a trusted trading partner for 195 countries around the world, including the US, with which we maintain a historic and mutually beneficial trade relationship. If the US government wishes to revise it, it should do so while respecting the autonomy of private businesses, international legality and bilateral agreements between the European Union and the US,” they said.
“In any case, the commitment of the Spanish government is, and always will be, to work for free trade and economic cooperation between countries, based on mutual respect and compliance with international law. Because what the world demands and deserves is more prosperity, not more problems,” the government sources said, according to Politico.
Trump’s remarks came before his meeting with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, when he accused Spain of refusing to use its bases in missions against Iran and said he had asked the US Treasury secretary to cut off all trade and commercial relations with the country.
“Spain was unacceptable,” Trump said, adding that he had asked Treasury Secretary Scott Bessant to “cease all dealings” with Spain.
“We will cut off all trade with Spain. We don’t want to have anything to do with Spain,” he added.
