The capital of the Algarve was voted the most relaxing city in Europe by what is described as the UK’s largest online travel agency, in an analysis that evaluated 80 European destinations. The city of Faro stood out for measurable factors, such as air quality, hours of sunshine, green spaces and leisure conditions, combining protected nature with a slower urban pace.
According to the property buying and selling portal, Idealista, the ranking was prepared by LoveHolidays based on five objective criteria: satisfaction index, air quality, average daily hours of sunshine, health index and percentage of green spaces. Data were normalized on a scale of 0 to 1 and converted into a final score of 0 to 100.
The analysis was not based on vague impressions or promotional descriptions. According to the same source, each city was specifically evaluated regarding its suitability for relaxation and recreation, in a universe of 80 European destinations.
The result placed Faro at the top of the table, supported by indicators such as around nine hours of sunshine per day and approximately 64% of the surrounding area classified as green space.
Compact center and protected nature
Part of the explanation lies in the urban configuration of the city. The historic center is compact, mostly pedestrianized, with cobbled streets and small squares where everyday life happens at a slower pace.
On the city’s doorstep is the Ria Formosa Natural Park, a protected lagoon system that has limited overbuilding and preserved extensive wetlands and barrier islands. Instead of dense hotel blocks, mangroves, salt marshes and birds such as flamingos predominate, says Idealista.
Beaches that require crossing
Unlike other coastal cities, Faro does not face directly onto the open sea. Atlantic beaches are located on offshore barrier islands, accessible by road or boat. The island of Faro is the simplest to reach, while the island of Culatra and the island Deserta require crossings across the estuary.
According to the tourist company Formosamar, “Praia de Faro is the most popular beach in our city”, stretching for around five kilometers on a sandy ridge that separates the ocean from the lagoon. The water is described as inviting and the area has beach and restaurant facilities.
Between popularity and isolation
Despite the high demand in high season, there are more protected alternatives. The Deserta island, accessible only by boat, is presented as a refuge with wide sands and little occupation outside the peak of summer. There is only one restaurant on the island, and it is recommended to bring provisions, explains the website.
In turn, the island of Culatra combines beaches and a small fishing community. According to the same source, in addition to the calm sand, it is possible to walk around the village and get in touch with the activities linked to the sea.
The British study also highlights the less intense nighttime environment when compared to other central areas of the Algarve. Among the factors that contributed to Faro’s leadership are “clean air and a high proportion of protected natural areas”, as well as “a noticeably calmer nightlife than in the central resorts of the Algarve”, cites .
The city is around three hours by train from Lisbon and has frequent air connections to the UK and northern Europe via Faro Airport, located a short distance from the centre. For LoveHolidays, Portugal “has quietly achieved a new title: the country with the most relaxing city in Europe”.
