The São Paulo Sports Justice Court (TJD-SP) punished, on Wednesday (4), Gustavo Marquesdefender of Red Bull Bragantino, with 12 suspension matches – valid only for state tournaments – and fines not total value of R$ 30 thousand. The decision was motivated by the February 21st.

On that occasion, Bragantino lost 2-1 to São Paulo and was eliminated from the Campeonato Paulista. After the match ended, Marques criticized the judge’s selection and stated that the São Paulo Football Federation (FPF) shouldn’t “put a woman in” to referee the gamedeclaring that She was not capable of the job due to their gender.

The player was convicted on the basis of two articles of the Brazilian Code of Sports Justice (CBJD):

  • Article 243-G (discriminatory act): punishment of eight matches suspension e fine of R$20 thousand;
  • Article 243-F (offense to honor): punishment of four suspension matches e fine of R$10 thousand.

After the episode that occurred in February, Red Bull Bragantino issued an official note and informed that the athlete recognized the error and apologized to the referee while still on the stadium’s premises. The São Paulo Football Federation also expressed support for the professional and officially referred the case to the Sports Court, which resulted in the conviction.

A Young Pan sought the athlete’s defense, but received no response until the publication of this report. The space remains open.

Gustavo Marques fired aggressively against referee Daiane Muniz, after Bragantino’s defeat.

“Firstly, thank God for the opportunity, for the goal. I think our team has always fought. We haven’t stopped fighting in any game, since the first game against Noroeste… we sinned today, I’m sure of that. We have to raise our heads. We know that in three days we already have other Brazilian games”, began the Bragantino defender.

She then addressed the judge directly, stating that the fact that she was a woman meant she did not have the ability to referee a Paulistão semifinal game. .

“But, firstly, I want to talk about refereeing. Because there’s no point in us playing against São Paulo, Palmeiras, Corinthians… and they put a woman to referee a game this big. I think she wasn’t honest for what she did. I think São Paulo has all the merit, for the shirt, for the tradition it has. I think she took after them, because regardless of the situation, Red Bull is big, but for her São Paulo was better, it was bigger.”

“I think this game is up to her, because she wasn’t a woman. We work every day, we leave family at home… brother, father, mother, wife, everyone, for her to come and end our dream. It was our dream to reach the semi or even the final, but she ended our game.”

“I think the São Paulo Federation has to look at games of this size and not include a woman. With all due respect to the women of the world. I’m married, I have my mother. Sorry if I’m saying something to women, but at her size I don’t think she has the ability to officiate a game like that.”

“We have to keep our heads up, because in three days we’ll be playing another game and it’s life.”

Then, asked by the TNT Sports reporter on the field about Daiane Caroline Muniz dos Santos’ mistakes, he reaffirmed gender issues.

“She made a mistake from when the game started. São Paulo already started to hold the game, and she said that Cleiton was holding the game, that I was holding the game… she had no criteria for both teams. I think the São Paulo Federation has to look at this. Not because Red Bull is small. Red Bull is very big. And you can be sure that we will make a lot of history this year”, he concluded.
