Drones from Iran hit the airport in Nakhchivan on Thursday morning, located about ten kilometers from the Iranian border. It was reported by the AFP and Reuters agencies.

“At around noon (local time) on March 5, drone attacks were carried out against the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic from the territory of the Islamic Republic of Iran,” the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry said, citing the local Report agency. According to the Department of Diplomacy, one drone hit the airport terminal and the other landed near a school in the village of Šakarabad. The incident resulted in two injuries.

Fires after an attack

Videos are circulating on social networks that show how an Iranian drone lands on the airport grounds and then explodes. A fire broke out on the spot.

The Azerbaijani Ministry of Foreign Affairs has already announced that it will summon the Iranian ambassador in Baku. “This attack on the territory of Azerbaijan violates the norms and principles of international law and contributes to increasing tensions in the region. We demand that Iran provide an explanation for this incident and take the necessary urgent measures so that such incidents do not recur in the future,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan said. At the same time, Baku reserved the right to respond by taking appropriate measures.

Regional tension

Since the beginning of the Israeli-American military operation in Iran, Tehran has launched a wave of retaliatory strikes on American military installations in the Persian Gulf. In addition, attacks were also recorded in Cyprus and Turkey. The impacts of Iranian drones or missiles have not been recorded in Azerbaijan so far.
