The leader of, announced this Thursday (March 5, 2026) a plan to expand the country’s naval capacity and develop nuclear weapons for the Navy. The statement was made during an inspection of the destroyer “Choe Hyon” at a shipyard in the coastal city of Nampo, according to North Korean state media
According to Kim, the country intends to build 2 destroyers per year from 2026 onwards. The goal is part of a five-year plan for the period from 2026 to 2030. The North Korean leader stated that the program projects the expansion of surface and submarine naval forces.
During the visit, Kim boarded the destroyer “Choe Hyon” and monitored crew training activities. The leader also observed the test launch of strategic cruise missiles from the vessel.
“We must build 2 surface ships of the same class or higher annually during the new five-year plan (2026-2030)”said Kim. He also said that nuclear weapons intended for the Navy are under development.
Kim stated that strengthening naval capacity is defensive in nature. According to him, the expansion of military forces is necessary to guarantee the country’s security.
