In a joint appearance with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese in Canberra, Carney was asked by reporters if there was a situation in which Canada would become involved in the conflict. “Participation can never be categorically ruled out,” he said, stressing that it was a “hypothetical” question. “We will stand with our allies … and we will always defend Canadians,” he added.
Carney previously stated that US and Israeli attacks on Iran ‘contrary to international law’. However, he expressed support for efforts to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons. Canadian Leader on Thursday he repeated his call for “de-escalation” of the conflict.
Carney’s comments come during an official visit to Australia aimed at deepening ties and attracting new investment. The prime minister will also visit other countries in Asia and the Pacific to try to reduce Canada’s dependence on the United States.
