In an interview with CNN Brazilthis Wednesday (4), senator Alessandro Vieira (MDB-SE), rapporteur of the CPI on Organized Crime, criticized the role of the STF (Supreme Federal Court) in the investigations into the Banco Master case. Vieira highlighted the political pressures and atypical decisions made by Court ministers, which, according to him, make it difficult for investigations to progress.
“We have a non-republican relationship between the group led by Daniel Vorcaro and major authorities, including ministers of the Supreme Court. We will have to advance in these investigations so that, in fact, Brazilians can have access to the truth”, stated the senator.
(Attorney General’s Office), which, in his view, acted slowly in questioning the urgency of the decision that led to Vorcaro’s arrest this Tuesday.
“The PGR claimed that 72 hours would be too little to evaluate requests for arrest, but this is atypical. These requests need to be evaluated quickly”, he highlighted.
The senator also mentioned the attitudes of ministers such as Toffoli Days e Gilmar Mendeswhich, in his opinion, have hampered the progress of the investigations. “These decisions are absolutely unreasonable”, he stated, referring to the return of the report on the case by Toffoli and the writ of mandamus reactivated by Gilmar, which, a company whose partners include Minister Toffoli.
“Minister Gilmar’s decision goes beyond the limit of the definition of atypical, it is absurdly unreasonable. He resurrects a writ of mandamus archived three years ago and, in that writ, grants habeas corpus to a legal entity. This is illegal through and through,” he said.
For Vieira, the biggest obstacle to advancing investigations is the power and influence that members of the STF still exercise in the process. “Fear is leading to the making of wrong decisions, which further expose Brazil’s justice system,” he concluded.
