USA: Senate bars text that requires Congressional approval for attack on Iran

The United States Senate rejected a resolution that sought to require President Donald Trump to seek congressional approval for future US military actions against Iran.

There were 53 votes against and 47 in favor. Republican Senator Rand Paul voted with Democrats to approve it; Democratic Senator John Fetterman joined Republicans to block it.

Even if the measure had advanced, it would have faced an uphill battle on Capitol Hill, as it would have needed to go through a full amendment process in the Senate before heading to the House.

Furthermore, it would probably be vetoed by Trump — and the veto needs two-thirds of the vote to be overturned.

The Chamber is expected to vote on the same issue this Thursday (5).
