Party votes against joining the alliance led by PT members, but confirms support for Lula in the race for Planalto
The Psol National Directory decided this Saturday (7 March 2026) to reject the proposal for federation with the PT. The vote was significant: 76% of delegates were against the measure, and only 24% supported joining the Brazilian Federation of Hope, which brings together PT, PCdoB and PV.
Despite the refusal to federate with the PT, the party unanimously approved support for the re-election of the president (PT) in the 1st round of 2026. With this, the Psol gives up on launching its own candidacy for the Presidency. The decision is presented by the acronym as part of its central priority: confronting what it calls “extreme right”represented by candidates such as (PL-RJ).
The decision ends a round of negotiations conducted by the PT in recent weeks. The president of the party, Edinho Silva, met with the president of the PSOL, Paula Coradi, and other leaders to convey Lula’s desire to expand the base around a single federation of the left.
The meeting took place at the PT’s national headquarters, in Brasília, and included debates on state campaigns, platforms and common agendas in Congress, such as the end of the 6×1 scale.
The proposal was defended by the Solidarity Revolution group, led by the minister (Psol-SP). And it had a concrete appeal. Smaller parties gain in federations: the model guarantees more time for electoral propaganda on radio and TV and a greater share of the party fund. For a party with a modest bench, the alliance with the PT would mean more visibility and resources in the 2026 elections.
But there was a cost. Joining the Brazilian Federation of Hope would mean sharing platforms and giving up autonomy in state compositions where PT negotiates with Centrão. Some of the PT leaders themselves had reservations about the arrangement for the same reason.
The opposing currents within Psol, including the national president of Psol, and members of the MES (Movimento Esquerda Socialista), were the majority in the videoconference meeting this Saturday (7th March).
The meeting also confirmed the renewal of the federation with Rede Sustentabilidade for another 4 years. The alliance is seen by the party leadership as strategic to overcome the barrier clause and guarantee access to resources and representation. Another goal defined by the directory for 2026 was the expansion of the bench in Congress.
The deputy (Psol-SP), from MES, celebrated the result. For her, the party decided correctly in preserving its political and programmatic independence.
Bomfim said that unity in elections and struggles does not mean that the Psol should dilute itself or give up its own identity. The party, according to her, will continue with its program, its electoral tactics in states and municipalities and its autonomy.
Coradi stated that the debate was conducted in a democratic way and with the participation of all tendencies. “We will now continue to be guided by the decisions taken today, but always with respect for divergent positions”these.
