Barna Borsos, a player of the under-21 team of the Újpest Hockey Academy, died tragically at the age of 20. The sudden death of the young athlete was reported by his club, while the clues, according to local media, lead to a nighttime accident in Budapest, he writes.
“It is with deep sadness that we announce that our U21 team player, Barna Borsos, has tragically and suddenly passed away. In his honor, we are organizing on Monday, March 9, 2026 from 7:00 p.m. commemorative candle lighting at the Winter Stadium on Szilágyi Street. Our sincere condolences to his family and loved ones. Their pain is shared by the entire UTE community,” the Újpest Hockey Academy said on its Facebook page.
Official information about the exact circumstances of the young hockey player’s death has not yet been confirmed by the authorities. However, according to information from the news show Tények on Friday night there was a serious traffic accident on the section of the M3 highway in Budapest’s Zugló district. For reasons that have not yet been explained, a passenger car broke through the guardrails at high speed and then crashed into the noise barrier.
Rescuers from the crew of the wrecked vehicle took a father with serious injuries to the hospital, but unfortunately, the life of his 20-year-old son could not be saved. TV2 news reported that the car was probably driven by the younger of the pair. The television adds that all other descriptions of the victim exactly match the profile of the deceased hockey player.
