Women’s Day is behind us and on this occasion many women were given bouquets of cut flowers by their partners. This is certainly one of the most beautiful expressions of respect, but also a beautiful decoration in our apartment. I guess every woman will admit that flowers in a vase look phenomenal and are a substitute for spring. One of the most popular cut flowers that we like to place in a vase in early spring are tulips. However, like other flowers, you need to take care of them so that they do not wither too quickly. There are several very important rules for caring for cut tulips, thanks to which we can effectively care for them. The basic thing is to trim the tulip stems before placing them in a vase. This will keep them looking fresh for up to a week. How to properly prune flower stems?

Trimming tulip stems will make them last longer in a vase

Before you put them in a vase, use a sharp knife or pruners to cut their stems to a length of 2 cm. Blunt scissors can crush the stems, making it difficult to absorb water. It is best to shorten the stems obliquely at an angle of 45 degrees. This angular cross-section increases the water absorption surface. You also need to remove the leaves from the bottom of the stems. Why? Well, the leaves that would be under water will start to rot and pollute the water, which will shorten the life of the flowers. Also remember to trim tulip stems every 1-2 days, changing the water in the vase each time. Thanks to this, the flowers will have constant access to fresh water.

Care of cut tulips

Be sure to place the vase with flowers in a cool place – not in the sun, and it is important that it is away from the fruit bowl. Secondly, remember to change the water in the vase every day. It is also worth adding about half a teaspoon of sugar to the water, as it acts as a conditioner for the tulips. Throwing in an aspirin tablet will also refresh the flowers. All these methods inhibit the growth of bacteria and mold in water, and thanks to this, the flowers last longer. What to do when the flowers fall? Then use a simple but effective trick. If so, you can try to freshen them up by wrapping them in damp paper and putting them in the fridge for at least 1 hour. After this time, place them in a vase and they will rise.
