Beckett Weara five-year-old boy from Chicago, USA, he was forced to relearn how to walk and talk after he fell ill with the flu which triggered a rare neurological condition called acute necrotizing encephalopathy (ANE), writes the portal
Just three days after contracting the flu in February 2025, Beckett’s condition seriously worsened and ended up in the hospital. ANE causes rapid neurological decline and brain swellingwhich can lead to I lose consciousness, seizures, difficulty moving, breathing and liver problems. The flu virus itself it does not directly cause brain damage; the condition arises as a result inflammation.
Beckett, who had a genetic mutation increasing the risk of ANEwas hospitalized after his first seizure in 2022 and underwent rehabilitationwhere gradually regained lost skills including the ability to walk. In 2025, however the flu has struck againthis time with by a much more severe attack of ANE. His condition rapidly worsenedwas intubated and the doctors informed the family that he is fighting for his life.
After nine-week hospitalization Beckett began intensive rehabilitation. He underwent speech therapywhich enabled him relearning how to swallow, eat and talkand gradually gained the ability to walk and run without aids. His mother Christine Wear describes his progress as monumental victoriesbecause every basic skill—holding a spoon, taking a step, saying a word—happened an important success.
Beckett continues daily rehabilitationfocused mainly on breathing control. Despite his achievements, his family remains cautious about his future. “When your child almost dies from what started out as a common illness, it changes the way you look at the world,” Christine explains.
This case comes after flu season 2024-2025which was according to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) the most serious since 2018 and included 279 flu-related child deaths – most reported during a seasonal epidemic. A new flu season has begun in Europe earlier than usual and recorded high flu activity already in December 2025.
What is acute necrotizing encephalopathy (ANE)?

- The virus does not attack the brain directly – the condition arises as a result excessive immune response of the bodywhich causes severe brain inflammation and swelling.

- ANE I life threatening diseasewhich requires urgent treatment for intensive care unit.
- Even after survival, children can be left with long-term movement problems or behavioral disorders.
“We try very hard not to live in constant fear, but despite everything there is hope. His journey is not over – he is still learning and surprising us every day.” concludes Christine.
