Most people are probably familiar with it: you have an old laptop or cell phone at home and you don’t really know what to do with it. So you shove it into a drawer, where it stays until the next cleanup. Hoarding has a tradition in Austria: on average, every Austrian household has at least eight discarded electrical and electronic devices stashed away, according to the results of a 2021 study by the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences (Boku) – and with it many valuable raw materials that could be reused.
