Canadian Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, leader of the Oklahoma City Thunder, recorded his 127th consecutive NBA game with at least 20 points on Thursday night in the 104-102 victory over Boston Celtic, surpassing the record that belonged to the legendary Wilt Chamberlain.
At 27 years old, the 2025 MVP and NBA champion with the Thunder reached the 20-point mark with a two-point mid-range shot with 7 minutes and 4 seconds remaining in the third quarter against the Celtics.
In the game, he scored 35 points and added 9 assists, 6 rebounds, 3 blocks and 2 steals.
“All the records and achievements are fantastic, but it doesn’t matter if you don’t win; that was the only thing I had in mind,” said Gilgeous-Alexander.
“I would have traded the record for the win any day of the week. I’m happy that we won and that, on top of that, I got the record,” he added.
This record may not be among the most iconic in the NBA, like the historic scoring mark that LeBron James set in February 2023, but it symbolizes the hierarchy that the Canadian point guard has achieved, as well as his constant high performance.
Chamberlain set his record between October 1961 and January 1963, averaging a stratospheric 49.2 points per game; In contrast, SGA has averaged 32.5 points since it began its streak on November 1, 2024.
