Australia, China and South Korea became the first teams to secure participation in the 2027 Women’s World Cup in Brazil, following results in the 2026 Women’s Asian Cup, which serves as a qualifying tournament for the World Cup.
The “Matildas”, as the Australian players are nicknamed, secured qualification for the tenth consecutive time after their 2-1 victory over North Korea this Friday (13). At the 2023 World Cup, which they co-hosted, the Australians reached the semi-finals.
China and South Korea won their places this Saturday (14), when they advanced to the semi-finals of the Asian Cup. The Chinese beat Taiwan 2-0 in extra time and South Korea had a dominant 6-0 victory over Uzbekistan.
The three teams join Brazil, automatically classified as the host country for the next edition of the world tournament.
This year’s Asian Cup will determine all six automatic places on the continent for the 2027 World Cup. In addition to the four semifinalists of the tournament, with a lack of definition between Japan and the Philippines, in play this Sunday (15), those eliminated in the quarterfinals will do a repechage to decide the two remaining places.
Brazil’s choice to host the World Cup was announced in May 2024, in Bangkok, Thailand. The Brazilian candidacy surpassed the joint proposal presented by Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands.
The competition will have 32 teams, which will play in São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Brasília, Belo Horizonte, Porto Alegre, Salvador, Recife and Fortaleza. The tournament will be held from June 24th to July 25th.
