From April onwards, there will be a new symbol on plastic packaging. This is an environmental project that aims to encourage recycling and promote the circular economy.
In Portugal, more than two billion plastic bottles are consumed every year.
In 2024, only 3% of recycled materials were reused, the third lowest figure in the European Union.

The new system foresees that all packaging with the Volta symbol will be taxed at 10 cents, an amount that the consumer can recover when delivering the packaging to one of the various collection points spread across the country.
In Europe, there are already 18 countries with similar systems.
The project aims to promote the circular economy. Currently, in Portugal, plastic reuse is around 51%.
The ambition is to achieve a collection rate of 90% by 2029.
SDR also wants to contribute to the reduction of carbon emissions and urban waste, in addition to creating around 1,500 jobs.
From April 10th, the Portuguese will begin to see the “Volta” symbol on packaging, giving them a direct incentive to recycle.
