How can an ordinary hair band save beautifully painted walls?

A freshly painted room brings a feeling of cleanliness and a fresh start. However, this experience often ends when someone in the family suddenly opens the door. Hitting a door handle on a wall leaves a dent, peeling plaster or a smudge that you can never clean perfectly. But there is a trick to prevent this.

If you want to avoid drilling into the floor in order to install various protrusions that prevent the door handle from touching the wall, or the acquisition of (mostly not very aesthetically pleasing) sliding stops, there is an elegant and almost invisible solution. Just visit the bathroom and borrow an ordinary hair band. If it is transparent, it will be the most appropriate choice.

The rubber band on the door can also serve another purpose, as shown in the following YouTube video by BRIGHT SIDE:

Energy absorption as a perfect trick

This simple trick is not just grandma’s advice, but has definite foundations in physics, as those of us who paid at least a little attention in school will surely confirm. The rubber band works on the principle of absorbing and dispersing energy. As the door moves towards the wall, it carries kinetic energy which is released in a destructive way when the hard handle hits the solid wall; that would be a more professional way to describe the situation when the doorknob hits the wall and peels off a piece of plaster.

The rubber band will save it

But if you wind a thicker hair elastic on the handle (specifically on its end facing the wall), you will create simple mechanical damper. The rubber absorbs part of the force of the impact and deforms, absorbing the energy and turning it into heat. This will prevent its effect directly on the fragile plaster.

The principle is not complicated

The important thing is that when the rubber band is compressed, the energy does not immediately return in full force (as if the door bounced like a ball), but some of it is “lost” in the process of internal friction in the material of the rubber band. The more we use, the better it can protect the surface of the wall – that’s logical. Additionally, by increasing the contact area upon impact, the remaining pressure is distributed over a larger wall surface, significantly reducing the risk of a deep dent. It is the same principle as when skiing. While if we were to step into deep snow with just one foot, we would immediately break through (which is a handle without rubber with a small contact point), on skis we will be able to drive over the same surface without any problems due to the larger area over which our weight (pressure on the snow) is distributed. It is the same in this case.

Create a rubber pad

The implementation of such an idea is a matter of a few seconds. Just take a thicker clear (silicone) or fabric rubber band that matches the color of the interior or handle and wrap it around the end of the handle several times. It is important that the rubber band forms a sufficiently strong “cushion” exactly where the handle touches the wall. It is better to slowly test whether the handle touches the wall in the right place, or move the rubber band. This solution is ideal especially in rented apartmentswhere the owners do not allow drilling into the tiles or parquet, or in households with small children who do not often mess with the door. In addition, the rubber also dampens the unpleasant sound of the impact, which everyone will appreciate especially during the quiet evening.

Clean and easy

We can say that it will be more convenient to buy a small self-adhesive mat in the store, which is stuck on the wall and done. But the problem arises, for example, with a rented apartment, where we know that sooner or later we will return it to the owner. Over time, a “map” of dust and dirt forms around such sticking stops, which you would have to retouch in a complex way. The rubber band on the handle, on the other hand, remains clean, and if necessary, you can simply wash it or replace it with a new one. It just is incredibly cheap wayhow to keep your home in perfect condition without the need for constant plaster repair and painting.
