The announcement was made amid the shortage crisis faced by the country since the oil blockade imposed by the United States
A new blackout in Cuba left more than 10 million people without energy this Monday (16). The announcement was made by the National Electrical Union (UNE), amid the shortages crisis that the country is facing since the oil blockade imposed by the United States.
The National Electrical Union (UNE) published in X about the blackout. “There was a total disconnection from the National Electric System. We have started to implement restoration protocols”, they reported announcing the blackout.
An hour later the company made a new publication updating the power outage situation. “Microsystems have already started working again in several territories of the country”, they wrote. “Energás already has a generating unit in operation”, he added.
Recurrent blackouts in Cuba
Two-thirds of Cuba, including the capital, Havana, were also left without electricity on March 4, due to a failure in the national grid, in a context of economic crisis worsened by the energy blockade also imposed by the United States on the island.
The Cuban electricity grid suffers regular supply cuts due to aging infrastructure and fuel shortages. Since the end of 2024, an island of 9.6 million inhabitants has experienced five widespread payments.
In addition to recurring general payments, Cubans face long scheduled daily cuts. In recent days, the capital has recorded outages of more than 15 hours, which could last for more than a day in the provinces.
Cuba x USA
The President of the United States, Donald Trump, declared this Sunday (15) that Cuba wants reach an agreement with the North American countrywhich, according to him, will be carried out “very soon”.
“Cuba also wants to reach an agreement, and I think very soon we will reach an agreement or whatever is necessary,” the American president told reporters aboard Air Force One.
“We are in negotiations with Cuba”, he added, stressing that “we will deal with Iran before we deal with Cuba”.
“I think something is going to happen in Cuba very soon,” he said.
Cuba confirmed last Friday (13) that it is in negotiations with the United States and freed political prisoners as part of an agreement with the Vatican, a long-time mediator between these two ideological enemies.
Trump, who has increasingly made statements about operations against Cuba, has stated since mid-January that negotiations were underway with senior officials on the island, but Havana had previously denied such contacts.
Since January, Washington has imposed an energy embargo on Cuba, invoking “exceptional threat” what this island, located just 150 kilometers off the coast of Florida, represents for US national security.
