Oscar 2026: ‘The Secret Agent’ ends campaign without awards

Despite enormous expectations and an acclaimed international campaign, the Brazilian film The Secret Agent ended its participation in the 2026 Oscar ceremony, on Sunday night (15), without statuettes.

The film directed by Kleber Mendonça Filho competed in four categories: Best Film, Best International Film, Best Actor (Wagner Moura) and Best Cast Direction (a category that debuted in this edition).

In the Best International Film category, the Brazilian representative was surpassed by the Norwegian Valor Sentimentaldirected by Joachim Trier.

In the Best Actor category, Wagner Moura, who received critical ovation for his role as professor Marcelo, saw the statuette go to Michael B. Jordan, for gothic horror Sinnersde Ryan Coogler.

For Best Cast Direction, the trophy went to One Battle After Anotherby Paul Thomas Anderson, which also took the top prize for Best Film.

Before the Oscar ceremony, The Secret Agent had already consolidated its international relevance at the Golden Globes. The Brazilian production won in the Best Foreign Language Film category, while Wagner Moura won the trophy for Best Actor in a Drama Film.
