Homemade is not always the best. It depends on how you took care of it. At least when it comes to compost. “The seeds of dormant weeds are often lurking in the compost. And not only that,” garden expert Jana Bucharová says in the podcast “Receptář do úl”.
You can listen to the audio version of the podcast here:
You pamper him and take care of him for several years. You wait for it to be ready. And when the time is right. Then you ceremoniously add it to the flower bed. But the vegetables look ungrateful and the space between the inconspicuous leaves is suddenly . Maybe you just underestimated it. And maybe you should have tried cleaning the compost properly before using it.
Professional compost
This will never happen to you with gardening compost. So why, when you finally have your prayed-for and pampered compost, do they betray you like this? The answer is simple. Compost from gardening never goes straight into bags. It has at least two cleaning steps before it makes its way to you. Just so he wouldn’t fail.
Hard work
The first is definitely tossing and . It may seem unnecessary, but the plants will thank you for it. Especially more demanding vegetables. Therefore, before you use the compost, pass it through a classic sieve. In this way, you will rid it of larger seeds, but also of unbroken twigs or other remains that would cause mischief in the flower bed.
Completely clean
Compost disinfection itself is a matter of some consideration. “They really do it in garden centers, and you can do it here at home,” says the expert. Just put the compost in the microwave for a few minutes or heat it in a conventional oven for a little longer. In addition to unwanted seeds, you also get rid of microorganisms that you might want to keep in the compost. And with which they sometimes re-inoculate the substrate in horticulture.
If you don’t like it, feel free to skip this step. “Most seeds and seedlings can cope with the natural microflora,” adds Jana Bucharová. Ultimately, the decision is therefore up to you anyway. But you definitely won’t spoil anything by disinfecting.
